Voice AI for Electricians

Every Missed Call Is Someone Ringing the Next Sparky

An AI receptionist that answers every electrical call, takes the fault and the site address, quotes your rates, and books the job before the caller reaches anyone else.

You Cannot Take a Call With Your Hands in a Switchboard

The work itself makes answering impossible. You are in a switchboard, up a ladder, in a roof space, testing, or holding something you cannot let go of. Half the time you cannot even hear the phone over a hole saw or a compressor. Electrical work also demands the kind of attention where stopping to take a call is not just inconvenient, it is the wrong thing to do.

So the calls stack up, and they are not evenly distributed across your day. They cluster in the morning when people arrive at a dead office, and again after five when someone gets home to a tripped RCD and no oven. Those are the hours you are least reachable and the callers are least patient. Someone with no power is not leaving a voicemail. They are ringing the next electrician the search gave them, and the first one to answer takes the job.

The invisible part is what makes it persistent. A missed call never enters your job list, never shows in your invoicing, and never generates a complaint, because the person never became your customer. You do not get to compare the month you answered everything against the month you did not. That is why the losses run for years without being addressed, and why the fix looks optional right up until you actually measure it.

I was missing calls all day while I was on the tools. Syntalia booked them in instead, and captured about $20,000 of work I would have lost.

What It Handles on an Electrical Line

Electrical calls range from a two-minute fault to a job worth five figures. Syntalia is set up to tell them apart.

1

Faults and no-power calls

A tripped RCD, half the house dead, a switchboard buzzing, burning smell from a socket. The AI takes the site address, establishes what has failed and how much of the property is affected, flags anything that sounds genuinely unsafe, and follows the escalation rules you set.

2

Quote enquiries worth real money

A rewire, a switchboard upgrade, a new build, LED conversion across an office, an EV charger install. These are the calls that justify the whole thing on their own. The AI captures the scope, the property type, the timeframe and the decision maker, and books the site visit while the caller is still interested.

3

EV charger installations

Growing fast and full of questions a caller expects an answer to: which chargers you install, whether the existing switchboard will take it, single or three phase, whether you handle the paperwork. The AI answers from your own information and books the assessment.

4

Compliance and certificate questions

Callers asking about a Certificate of Compliance, an Electrical Safety Certificate, whether work needs to be certified, or requesting a copy of paperwork from a job you did last year. Routine, repetitive, and exactly the sort of call that interrupts you for no revenue.

5

"What do you charge?" and "do you cover my area?"

It quotes your actual call-out fee, hourly rate and after-hours loading, and it knows the suburbs you travel to. Straight answers, so nobody is left guessing and you are not driving to a job you would have declined.

6

Builders, property managers and commercial clients

Repeat work with its own details: site access, a job number, a variation, an approval limit, an invoice going to head office rather than the site. All captured in the job notes instead of half-remembered from a call you took on a roof.

7

The calls that are just noise

Wholesalers chasing, wrong numbers, sales calls, someone asking whether you do data cabling when it is on your website. The AI deals with them and you never hear about it.

Where the Job Actually Lands

The call is only useful if the job reaches you with the detail intact.

Trade job management platforms are systems we fit around rather than vendor integrations we claim. The call is captured and the job handed over the way your business already takes work on. Tradify and Fergus were both built in New Zealand, the same market Syntalia is tuned for. Tell us what you run and we will confirm exactly how the handover works for your setup.

What a Missed Call Is Actually Worth: Do the Maths

Most electricians have never put a number on this, because the loss is invisible. It is worth five minutes with your own figures rather than anyone else in the industry quoting you a statistic. Here is the calculation.

Start with missed calls. Look at your phone right now and count the missed calls and unreturned voicemails from the last full working week. Not the ones you called back and won, the ones that went nowhere. Most sole operators and small crews land somewhere between five and fifteen. Call that number M.

Now your average job value. Not your dream job, your ordinary one: the fault call, the extra socket, the small maintenance visit. For a lot of New Zealand electricians that sits somewhere between 200 and 600 dollars once the call-out and an hour or two of labour are in. Call that A. Then estimate what share of those missed callers would actually have become jobs. Be hard on yourself here rather than generous. A quarter is a conservative figure for people who rang a specific tradesperson about a specific problem.

The weekly loss is M multiplied by A multiplied by that conversion share. Take a middling case: eight missed calls a week, an average job of 350 dollars, and one in four converting. That is 700 dollars a week, or roughly 36,000 dollars a year, from the ordinary small jobs alone. It does not count the rewire or the switchboard upgrade or the commercial contract that came in as one unanswered call and went to a competitor, and those are the ones that actually hurt.

Run the numbers for your own business before you make a decision about this. If the annual figure comes out small, an AI receptionist is not urgent for you and we will tell you so on the demo. For most trade businesses it does not come out small, and that is the entire argument. Everyone starts on a free pilot precisely so you can measure the real number on your own line rather than taking ours.

The After-Hours Call Nobody Wants to Own

Electrical faults do not respect a five o clock cutoff. A switchboard trips when the oven goes on at dinner time. An alarm starts on a Sunday. A commercial client loses power to a chiller on a public holiday, which is simultaneously the most expensive call of the year for them and the one you are least likely to answer.

The usual options are both bad. Divert to voicemail and the urgent work, which is also the best-paying work, goes to whoever picks up. Take every call yourself and you never actually stop working. Most electricians oscillate between the two and feel vaguely guilty about both.

With an AI receptionist you write the policy once and it holds. Anything genuinely unsafe or a total loss of power at a commercial site reaches you straight away, whatever the hour. A domestic fault where the property still has most of its power gets triaged, priced and booked for the morning. A quote enquiry at nine at night gets answered properly and booked for the next working day. You get your evenings back without handing the after-hours market to a competitor.

It Answers Like Someone Who Knows Your Business

Before it takes a call we load it with your actual material: the work you do and the work you turn down, whether you take on domestic or commercial or both, your call-out fee and hourly rate, your after-hours loading, the suburbs you travel to, your hours, and how you handle certification and paperwork. Callers get your answers, not a generic script.

It is tuned for how people here speak, which matters more than it sounds. New Zealand and Australian accents, local suburb and street names, and the words callers genuinely use: the RCD has tripped, half the house is out, the switchboard is making a noise, we need a sparky. Generically trained overseas voice AI mishears exactly this vocabulary, and that is the most common reason a trade business tries one and abandons it.

You hear every call and read every transcript, so you can correct and sharpen what it says as you learn what your callers actually ask about. Over a few weeks it becomes noticeably better at answering your phone in particular.

Electricians Voice AI Questions

Can an AI receptionist tell an urgent electrical fault from a routine one?

That is the main thing it is set up to do. It establishes what has failed, how much of the property is affected, whether there is any sign of something unsafe such as burning or arcing, and where the site is. Then it follows the rules you wrote: reach you immediately, or book it in for the next working day with the fault documented. You set the threshold and you can change it once you see how your calls actually break down.

Will it quote my rates correctly?

It quotes the numbers you give us: call-out fee, hourly rate, after-hours loading, minimum charge, and anything you price differently. For work that genuinely cannot be quoted over the phone, such as a rewire or a switchboard upgrade, it says so plainly and books the site visit rather than inventing a figure you would have to walk back.

How much does an AI receptionist cost for an electrical business?

Pricing is per business, as a flat monthly figure based on your call volume and which systems you connect, rather than per call or per minute. Per-minute pricing punishes you in exactly the months your phone does well, which is the wrong shape for a trade business. Everyone starts with a free demo and a pilot, and we quote you directly once we know your volume.

Does it work with Tradify, Fergus or simPRO?

Syntalia works alongside all of them. Every call produces a clean job record, with the customer, the site address, the fault, the urgency and the slot booked, and that reaches you the way you already take work on. To be precise about what is a shipped connector: bookings are written directly into Google Calendar today, while Tradify, Fergus, ServiceM8, simPRO and AroFlo are platforms we fit around rather than vendor integrations we claim. Tell us what you run on the demo call and we will confirm the handover for your setup.

Can it handle EV charger enquiries?

Yes, and they are worth setting up carefully because the enquiry volume is growing and the jobs are substantial. The AI answers from your own information: which chargers you install, whether you assess the existing switchboard first, single or three phase, what the paperwork involves, and roughly what the process looks like. Then it books the assessment rather than leaving a keen customer to ring someone else.

Will my commercial clients mind talking to an AI?

In practice commercial callers mind a ring-out far more. A facilities manager with a fault wants it logged accurately and actioned, and getting that in forty seconds at any hour beats a voicemail box every time. You control exactly how the AI introduces itself, and it can put a caller through to you whenever the situation warrants a person.

Do I have to change my number?

No. You keep the number on your van, your shirts and your listings, and we point it at the AI. Route every call to it, or only after hours, or only when your line is busy. Nothing you have already advertised has to change.

How long does setup take?

Minutes to go live once we have your information, with no hardware and nothing for you to learn. We load your services, rates, call-out zones, hours and policies, connect your calendar, then point your number at it. The pilot is free, so you can measure what it captures on your own line before committing.
